Throughout the year as part of our
United Snapshot
series, we will feature a different United team, highlighting their great activities on and off the field!
The 2004 Boys (19U) team, coached by Bryan Kim and Steve Winton, have had a fantastic summer. Players and families on this team enjoy being part of a team that plays soccer at a high level and gives back to the larger community through volunteer and other engagement programs. They are a community that supports each other and the AYSO program superbly.
Their summer started with volunteering to help us run tryouts. If you were at the May tryouts for 2011-2008 players, you met one of the players who helped check you in! The majority of these players attend Davis Senior High School and, after finishing their school day, came to Nugget Field to help. From finding names on registration lists, to organizing bibs and setting up tents, they were our go-to support team and were instrumental in a successful United tryout experience!
They continued to give back to the soccer community in the summer, working with FC Davis players in leading sessions at the FC Davis camp for United teams and participating in the summer internship program provided by FC Davis. If you had the chance to enjoy a home game during FC Davis
stellar summer
, you likely had some of the AYSO United Davis 2004 boys welcoming you to the match!
And of course, there was playing soccer. These players can usually be found getting together and playing pick-up around Davis. They helped inspire our "Just Play" events, pick-up soccer hours at Nugget Field on Wednesday evenings this summer. When players were able to get out on the pitch together, Just Play was a joy to see. Younger kids were beginning to get the hang of setting their rules, picking positions, and enjoying unstructured play on their own terms. The older players just went at it -- creating the foundation for United to build upon Just Play nights into the future!
Coach Bryan and Steve have been with this team for more than five years. They advance the AYSO philosophies and compete on the pitch at a high level. To that end, early this summer, the team played in the Portland City Summer Classic and brought home the first piece of hardware for an AYSO United Davis team! This tournament hosted teams from OR, CA, WA, ID, and MT. The boys brought home the silver medal, after a 1-0 loss in the championship when one of Oregon's top ten teams scored on the last kick of the game! Just as importantly, while in the Northwest, the team visited the Portland Rose Garden, Powell's Books and multiple universities in the ar
ea. As part of figuring out their next steps after high school, players and families were given tours of the University of Washington, Reed College and University of Portland.
With a year or two left to go before moving on to new life adventures, we're excited to see all that is to come for them! Good luck this season!!
