If you follow us on social media (Facebook | Instagram), you might have seen our February See Her. Be Her. campaign. Our goal is to highlight women leaders at all levels in our soccer community. We want to celebrate successes, and we want to highlight areas where we must improve. We hope you will take a few minutes to celebrate March 8, International Women’s Day, with us!

Referees

On February 5, over 20 United players and parents participated in a Referee Day for Women with Davis AYSO. On this day, 95% of the referees were women! It was a day of celebration and community with one young player commenting after “all the referees at my game today were girls… it was so cool”

Coaches

AYSO United Davis has eight women head and assistant coaches on its 14 teams. They deliver exemplary coaching and leadership to our teams. They do so as the percentage of women coaches in the US (especially at competitive levels) has fallen in recent years. We can do better and, in the coming years, we have a goal of 50% of our coaches being women.

Leaders

Half of AYSO United Davis’ leadership team are women. Our partner organization, Davis AYSO, also has exemplary leaders with women serving as the current and previous directors (Regional Commissioners). We are committed to increasing participation of women at all levels of the organization.

Players

Sports have a positive impact on kids. From goal setting, to managing setbacks, to developing confidence, sports teach us about life. Yet, by the time they turn 14 years old, girls drop sports at almost double the rate of boys. United seeks to empower athletes to continue with this sport into high school and beyond. Playing with friends at a competitive and appropriate level is why we were founded and why we think we will help keep more players, boys and girls, playing soccer.

In the end, increasing women’s involvement in playing, refereeing, coaching, and managing inspires the next generation. Our club’s teams have over 100 girls and young women players who are future referees, coaches, and managers because when they see her, they know they can be her.

We hope this newsletter has inspired you to elevate and be inspired by the voices of women around you - both on and off the pitch! Happy International Women’s Day!
