Coach Selection Process

At AYSO United Davis, our coaches should represent the best of what youth sports can offer. They are more than instructors—they are mentors, educators, and leaders who use soccer as a tool for lifelong growth. At the onset of the season one lead coach per anticipated team is selected. That coach then works to identity coaching partners that will also support the team throughout the year.

What We Look For

Our coaches are held to high standards across the following six pillars:

  • Character – Integrity, empathy, and a strong moral compass.

  • Professionalism – Dependable, communicative, and prepared.

  • Team Management – Ability to build team culture, manage logistics, and engage families.

  • Development – Deep commitment to helping players develop as athletes and as people. Commitment to ongoing coaching education and growth.

  • Technical Knowledge – Understanding of soccer fundamentals and skill progression.

  • Tactical Prowess – Ability to adapt strategy and systems to the developmental needs of the team.

Our coaches are also committed to growing with players through ongoing education. Half hold USSF D Licenses and others hold advanced AYSO Coaching Certifications. They embody AYSO’s Six Core Philosophies—including Positive Coaching, Player Development, and Good Sportsmanship—and believe the game of soccer is the best teacher. Our coaches have many coaching tools but never forget the importance of developing strong humans first.

Technical Support

Our coaching staff receives in-house support from Technical Developer Pip Harragin, who regularly consults with teams on player development plans, training cycles, and competitive challenges. Pip works closely with all coaches to raise the quality and consistency of our club-wide soccer experience. It is always a treat when she is at the field leading a training session for players or mentoring coaches in their journey.

Coaching Interest Process

Each season, we open our coaching interest form to the broader soccer community. This includes both returning coaches and new applicants.

Following submission, Pip and Director of Coaching, Adam Lewin, meet individually with all prospective coaches to understand their goals, values, and desired roles. Once drafted, our Child and Volunteer Protection Advocate then reviews the safety training and background check status of all coaches in addition to all in-season reviews or comments. These conversations inform final coaching placements and ensure alignment with our club's vision.

The selection process is thoughtful and competitive. As with any selection process, there are decisions made. We aim prioritize team needs, player development pathways, and leadership potential when assigning coaches. Every decision reflects a deep commitment to the players, the game, and our community.

Age group coaches are announced ahead of tryouts and are present at tryouts, playing an active role in the selection process. Once teams are formed, age group coaches will personally contact families to welcome them and set expectations for the season. When two teams are projected within an age group (e.g., 11U), United leadership, in conjunction with technical mentors and experienced age group coaches, will assign coaches with intention—balancing player needs, team dynamics, and long-term development plans.
